How to Specify Fabric Weight and Elasticity for Custom Jogger Bulk Orders?

The foundation of any good piece of clothing is the fabric. When you are looking to make a large order of custom joggers, getting the material right is everything. A lot of people only focus on the look, but we should talk about the feel and the performance. That is where fabric weight and elasticity come in. If you get these wrong, your joggers might feel too stiff or they might lose their shape after a few washes. Here is how to get it right for your next bulk project.

Understanding Fabric Weight by GSM

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter, which is what people call GSM. This number tells you how thick and heavy the material feels when you hold it. A low GSM number means the fabric is very light and breezy. A high GSM number means it is thicker and warmer. For example, a lightweight summer tee might be around 140 GSM, but a cozy winter hoodie is usually 300 GSM or more. For joggers, the weight changes the entire personality of the pants. Light joggers around 200 GSM feel airy and loose, while heavy joggers at 400 GSM feel structured and warm. So, when you are talking to a manufacturer, you need to know exactly what feeling you are trying to create.

Choosing the Right GSM for Your Needs

If you are making joggers for the summer or for very active workouts, you should look for lighter fabrics. Usually, joggers in the range of 220 to 280 GSM strike a nice balance. They are thin enough to breathe but still have enough substance to not look cheap. However, if you want a premium jogger that feels luxurious and holds its shape well, you should move up to the heavyweight category. Many quality joggers fall between 300 and 350 GSM. This weight provides durability and a nice hand feel. We often suggest that serious streetwear brands go for at least 320 GSM. That weight gives the joggers a nice drape that falls naturally and looks expensive.

Getting the Elasticity Right

Weight is only half the story. You also have to think about stretch and recovery. Joggers need to move with the body, but they also need to snap back into place. If the elasticity is too weak, the knees will bag out. If it is too tight, the joggers will feel restrictive. Generally, a good jogger fabric will contain some spandex or elastane. Often, a blend like 95% cotton with 5% spandex gives you just the right amount of stretch without feeling like a pair of yoga tights. You should look for a fabric that stretches about 40 to 60 percent but has a very high recovery rate. That high recovery means the fabric returns to its original shape after you move.

Checking Your Specifications Through Sampling

The best way to avoid a disaster in bulk production is to check a sample first. Do not just look at the sample. You need to pull and tug on it. If you stretch the fabric, count how long it takes to go back. If it stays stretched out, that is a bad sign. Also, check the seams. The thread needs to have some elasticity too, or it will pop when the fabric stretches. Some people wash the sample to see how much it shrinks. You want shrinkage below 3% to keep the sizing consistent across all your joggers. This is a small step that saves a lot of headaches later.

Communicating Clearly with Your Manufacturer

When you are ready to place your order, do not use vague words. Telling a factory you want a "soft" or "comfy" jogger is asking for trouble. Give them hard numbers. Tell them exactly the GSM range you need, like "280 grams plus or minus 5 grams." Tell them the exact blend you want, such as "80% cotton, 20% polyester with 5% spandex". A professional factory will have charts for this. They will test the color fastness and the tensile strength. Give them a Tech Pack that lists all these numbers. This makes sure the fabric you see in the sample is the same one that arrives on your doorstep in a big carton. That is the secret to a smooth bulk order.
